Best used EVs for a Canadian winter

Which used EVs should go furthest in a Canadian winter? This list covers cars no longer sold new in Canada, discontinued models and previous generations, with a heat pump as standard and an original MSRP under C$70,000. Each model appears once, as its trim with the most winter range.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 Preferred Long Range RWD leads at about 407 km in winter, from a rated 550 km. Prices shown are the MSRP when new. Used prices are not shown yet.

Our winter figure is about 74% of rated range for a car with a heat pump, a planning number based on CAA and Recurrent cold-weather tests, not a test of each car. It does not allow for battery wear on a used car, so ask for a battery health report before you buy. More in our winter range guide.

How we ranked

We start with every trim in our catalogue that is no longer sold new in Canada (discontinued, or replaced by a newer generation), keeping only trims that have a heat pump as standard and an original MSRP under C$70,000. For each model we keep the one trim with the highest estimated winter range, so no model appears twice, and leave out trims with no estimated winter range in our data. Models are then sorted by that figure, highest first. We show the top 10 of the 16 models that qualify. Winter range is our estimate for a cold day around -10°C with the heat on: 74% of rated range for a car with a heat pump. Every trim shown has one as standard, so here the order matches rated range.

Specs are manufacturer figures for Canada; winter range and charging times are our estimates. Always confirm with the dealer.
